Easter Bank Holiday Rubbish Collections

Recycling, food, rubbish and garden waste collections due to take place on Friday 2 April will be collected on Saturday 3 April.

Collections in the week beginning Monday 5 April will not change despite the Easter bank holidays.

Check your bin day

From Monday 5 April our new waste contract with Biffa starts which will affect recycling, rubbish and food waste collections.

For most households, the main change is that weekly food waste will be collected on the same day as recycling or rubbish, but at a different time and in a different vehicle.

Some residents will have a new collection day, or their recycling or rubbish collection days swapped. We have written to all these households advising them of the changes.

Garden Waste & Rubbish Collections – Disruption due to Severe Weather

Christmas and New Year Recycling and Rubbish Collections

Over Christmas, recycling, food waste and general rubbish collection days will change. From Tuesday 5 January 2021 collections will return to their usual days.

 Extra recycling

You can place additional recycling in plastic carrier bags, cardboard boxes or clear recycling sacks bought from some supermarkets or online next to your recycling bin. Please don’t use black sacks, as the collection crew needs to be able to see it’s recycling.

 Extra rubbish

You can place additional rubbish in sacks next to your black wheeled rubbish bin and our collection crews will collect it on your first rubbish collection day after Christmas Day.

Please check the items you throw into your rubbish bin as so much can now be recycled. You can check what you can recycle at www.tandridge.gov.uk/recycling.

Recycling Christmas trees
Anyone with a real Christmas tree can recycle it in the following ways once the festive season is over:

·         Take it to the Community Recycling Centres in Bond Road, Warlingham, or Chaldon Road, Caterham and put it in the garden waste container.

·         Cut it up and compost it in your home compost bin.

·         If you are a member of the Biffa Green Waste Club, cut up your tree (maximum tree trunk 4″ diameter) and put it in your bin for collection. Make sure you can still close the lid.

Christmas and New Year collections

Recycling and rubbish collection days will change following the bank holidays over Christmas. Check your collection calendar for full details.
Garden waste collections will not take place in the weeks beginning 28 December and 4 January 2021. Please check your garden waste calendar for scheduled collections.

Extra recycling?

If you’ve got extra recycling this Christmas place it in clear plastic bags or in a cardboard box next to your blue lidded bin.

More rubbish?

If you can’t fit all your non-recycled rubbish in your council issued wheeled rubbish bin, you can put additional bagged rubbish next to your bin. This will only be collected on your first rubbish collection day after Christmas Day.

Recycling centres closed

The community recycling centres will be closed on 25-28 December and 1 January, check the website for opening times.
 

Be careful when throwing away face masks and disposable gloves

Disposable face masks and gloves should be put inside a carrier bag which is tied up and placed in your black wheeled rubbish bin.

If you are wearing a face mask and gloves when you are outside, please don’t drop them on the ground or put them in public bins. Not only is it littering and bad for the environment, but you may put someone at risk of catching the virus, even if you are not showing any symptoms.

 

Eight ways yule find it easy to go green this Christmas

Even though we’re under national restrictions, you can still do some of your Christmas shopping. Why not give a gift to the planet as well as your loved ones?

Here’s eight easy ways to go green and watch your waste this festive season:

  1. Avoid buying wrapping paper and cards which are glittery, lined with foil or plastic, or have batteries as these can’t be recycled.
  2. Try making your own wrapping paper. Watch this short film for tips and ideas.
  3. Make your own crackers and fill them with non-plastic toys so they can be recycled easily. 
  4. Choose a real Christmas tree. They can be taken to your local community recycling centre, or if you’re a Green Waste Club member, cut it up and put it in your brown wheeled bin for collection. . 
  5. Repair or re-wear festive jumpers rather than buying new.
  6. Upcycle items you might otherwise throw away and give as gifts.
  7. Buy presents and decorations from zero waste shops.
  8. Select energy-saving LED fairy lights and put any broken fairy lights in a tied carrier bag and leave it next to your green food caddy for collection.

Recycling and rubbish collections in bad weather

Adverse weather conditions can severely affect our recycling and rubbish collections. We appreciate delays to the collection services are inconvenient and we will do our best to keep services running.

We undertake 73,000 collections each week and on a normal collection day, our collectors load around 110 tonnes of recycling and rubbish and 15 tonnes of food waste into the trucks, crossing roads and walking to and from properties about 400 times each day carrying food caddies and pushing wheeling bins. Trying to do this safely on a slippery pavement or footpath is risky and we have a duty of care to look after the collectors.

Recycling & Rubbish Collections and Bonfires

No bonfires please

There has been an increase in bonfires as people clear out their houses and gardens. Unfortunately, we are not able to ban all bonfires even temporarily, as having a bonfire is not against the law. Our key messages around this are:

Be considerate of your neighbours and don’t light bonfires to dispose of waste.
The coronavirus is known to cause serious respiratory problems, which could be made much worse if the sufferer is exposed to smoke from bonfires.

Bonfires can also become out of control or cause accidents, creating extra pressure on the already busy emergency services.
If you are affected regularly by smoke in your home and/or garden you can report this –more information.

Community recycling centres are closed

The community recycling centres in Caterham on the Hill, Warlingham and the Earlswood depot are currently closed.
Please store any items you would normally take to a centre at home until they re-open, please don’t put them in your bins.

Please store extra waste

If you decide to have a spring clean while you’re at home, don’t put everything in the bin straight away, please wait until normal service resumes. To ensure your rubbish and recycling is collected, please don’t put items in your bins, which should be taken to a community recycling centre.

Consider giving unwanted clothes, shoes and household goods to charity shops when they re-open.
Do not leave anything outside closed charity shops as this is fly tipping, which is illegal dumping and a crime.

Don’t flytip waste

Options for disposing of your waste are reduced now, but don’t be tempted to dispose of your waste elsewhere, this is flytipping.
Flytipping is against the law and those convicted face fines of up to £50,000 or up to five years’ imprisonment, as well as other potential penalties.

Rubbish and recycling

Unlike many other councils, which have suspended some services, we have managed to maintain our rubbish and recycling service. There will be more waste generated after Easter, so collections may take longer. All collections will return to their usual days from Tuesday 21 April. More details:

Garden waste collections

Garden waste collections due on Good Friday 10 April will be delayed until Saturday 11 April. Collections due on Easter Monday 13 April and during that week will be one day late. Help prevent flytipping

Residents and businesses are urged to be vigilant when employing traders to dispose of their waste or risk fines of up to £400.

Although a rogue trader may flytip the waste, it could still be whoever employs them that is fined. To avoid prosecution, residents and businesses must ensure they use a registered waste carrier and ask them how and where they intend to dispose of waste, get a receipt and avoid traders who knock on doors or advertise on websites like Facebook and Gumtree.

Flytippers can face fines of up to £50,000 and imprisonment of up to twelve months if convicted. They are also at risk of being sentenced to unpaid community service or having their vehicle crushed.

Residents can help by making sure anyone who collects waste from their home is properly licensed. The Environment Agency has a public register of waste carriers on its website https://environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers or call 03708 506 506.

Changes to what can be taken to Community Recycling Centres

There will be changes to what can be taken to Surrey County Council’s Warlingham and Caterham community recycling centres (CRCs) over the next few months.

From Tuesday 7 May, residents who use Warlingham CRC will only be able to take recycling to the site. That includes garden waste, clothes and home textiles, small electricals, kitchen appliances and batteries. This is a trial while Surrey County Council review alternative options for maintaining an effective service, and to see if it helps residents recycle even more of their waste.

The nearest alternative CRC’s are in Caterham and in Earlswood.

Waste accepted at the Caterham site includes black bag waste, hazardous materials, carpets and non-wooden furniture including mattresses.

Waste accepted at the Earlswood site includes black bag waste, hazardous materials, carpets and furniture. Items such as rubble, soil, plasterboard and tyres can also be taken but are subject to a charge.

Charges for construction wood waste and roofing felt

Charges are going to be introduced for construction wood waste such as sheds, fencing panels and posts, decking and fitted kitchen units, and roofing felt

That means from Tuesday 7 May, you will no longer be able to take any wood waste or roofing felt to Caterham CRC as there isn’t space at the site to take payments for chargeable waste materials. All wood waste and roofing felt can instead be taken to Earlswood CRC.

The charges for construction wood waste and roofing felt at all other sites will start on Monday 3 June.

  • CRCs which currently accept chargeable waste are in Camberley, Earlswood, Epsom, Guildford, Leatherhead, Lyne, Shepperton, Witley and Woking.
  • Farnham CRC will be able to accept all chargeable waste from Monday 3 June.

These changes have been decided by Surrey County Council’s cabinet following the consultation with residents last year. Details of what materials can be taken to each CRC, chargeable materials, locations and opening hours are on the Surrey County Council website.

New Wheelie Bins for General Rubbish are on Their Way

Later this year the Council will be delivering a new, free, 180 litre wheelie bin to all households for their rubbish. This bin should be big enough for most households, as it holds around three full bags of rubbish. Smaller or larger bins or council bin bags for residents with access issues can be ordered by completing a form at www.tandridge.gov.uk/newbins by 30 April 2019.

Once the new bins are delivered, they can be used straight away. Residents need put the new wheelie rubbish bin at the edge of their property, where they normally leave their recycling wheelie bin, by 6am on their scheduled waste collection day.

Residents can arrange for the Council to collect their old rubbish bins which wil be then be recycled into new products such as picnic benches. Residents can request this collection by completing a form at: www.tandridge.gov.uk/newbins.

Storm Fionn – advice in the event of a power cut

Anyone experiencing a power cut should:

We advise people to stay clear of power lines and report damaged power lines immediately by calling 105 free from either a landline or a mobile phone. If they see electricity lines that are down or causing significant risk to the public they should call 999.

We provide extra help to customers on our Priority Service Register during a power cut. Households with older or disabled people, those with children under five, or where someone uses medical or mobility equipment that requires electricity as well as other reasons can join the register.
